Derek has a broad commercial practice that incorporates real property and building and construction litigation. He regularly acts for the Building Insurers' Guarantee Corporation in both insurance recovery actions and defended claims. In addition to civil practice, Derek has acted in criminal matters for defendants and as a prosecutor on behalf of the NSW Department of Environment and Conservation and the Roads and Traffic Authority. Before being called to the Bar, Derek had an earlier career in journalism and worked as a solicitor with a major national law firm. He is an adjunct lecturer in real property in the Faculty of Law at Sydney University. Derek holds the degrees of LLB (UNSW) and Master of Policy Studies (UNSW).
